Topics: Greetings, Informal/Formal address; Nationalities & Geography, Colors (Flags); Using Numbers 0-30, Telling age; Alphabet pronunciation; Basic cognates; Basic classroom items & commands

  • I can greet, respond to greetings, and say farewells to others in formal and informal settings.

  • I can make simple requests.

  • I can ask simple questions and provide simple answers in the present tense at the Novice-Mid to Novice-High level.

  • I can demonstrate basic geographical knowledge of the target countries in a spoken, signed, or written conversation.

  • I can talk about and describe some of the cultural customs and traditions of the target countries in
    English and the target language at the Novice-Mid level.

  • I can understand simple instructions in the target language related to classroom activities.

  • I can read and listen to descriptions and recognize images that match the descriptions.

  • I can use formal and informal forms of address in rehearsed situations.

  • I can recognize similarities and differences of formal and informal forms of greetings, farewells, and expressions of courtesy in the target language and compare these to my own language

  • I can use cognates to expand my knowledge of the target language.

  • I can recognize differences, similarities, and significance of gestures in the target culture and my own.
    Example: handshakes or other body gestures that express meaning.
